-How can you minimize awareness of floaters?
Can I get rid of them? What can I do? They keep getting in the way!

Floaters are usually described as little 'specks', 'spots', 'hairs', or 'funny shapes' that seem to float in mid-air and disappear if you cover one eye or the other.  People will frequently notice them when they do some routine task such as reading at a favorite desk or in a favorite chair.  They usually distract from, more than block vision. 

Many people ask if the material IN the eye can be removed?  Yes, it can in certain unique cases, but the risk of complications such as a retinal detachment and cataract formation make it unwise to perform merely to get rid of the distraction. 

The best approach to help the situation is to keep track of when and WHERE you notice the "floaters" and WHERE IS THE LIGHT COMING FROM WHEN YOU SEE THE FLOATER(S).  What you are seeing is actually a shadow on the retinal photo receptors, so if you REPOSITION THE LIGHT SOURCE or TURN YOUR BODY so that the shadow will fall on a different direction, it may possibly make the floater in question disappear... it is however possible that another one might take its place.

The GOOD NEWS is that since gravity is always pulling on a "floater", it will tend to settle toward the bottom of the inside of the eye.  Optically, the world is upside down on our retina, so this settling will seem over time like that particular floater will be higher and higher until it may disappear into your eyebrow area. 

Just remember, DON'T CHASE FLOATERS OR TRY TO MAKE FLASHES OCCUR by moving your eyes or head.  You COULD CAUSE a retinal detachment.
